the swedish chemicals agency (kemi) has published a report on the effect of the national ban on mercury that came into effect 1 june 2009. the report assesses mercury-free alternatives used, or that are expected to be used, while the survey did not cover exemptions to the ban.
the overall conclusion is that:
● for most applications it has been possible to introduce adequate mercury-free alternatives
and the transition generally took place before the general ban came into force.
● in some applications where exemptions still apply, mercury has also been replaced with
mercury-free technology.
● kemi says the clear swedish policy to phase out all mercury use is probably a contributing
factor to the development of alternatives in such a short time.
